Music is a worldwide language.
Following the glasses-free 3D holographic light show, at 7:30pm on the evening of August 28, the 2020 Chengdu International Sister Cities Youth Music Festival kicked off at the Chengdu Eastern Suburb Memory Park.
Music Crosses Borders
At this year's festival, the innovative "online + offline" model provides a broader stage for musicians from both China and abroad. 129 foreign bands and groups hailing from 72 cities, regions and international organizations of 45 countries have sent 145 videos of performances to participate this event.
"Music is an elegant annotation to the city's foreign opening-up development. The 14-year course of the festival's development, to some extent, records the expansion of Chengdu's international exchanges and the circle of friends," said an official from the Chengdu Municipal Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office.
Chengdu has a profound history of music culture. As early as the Tang Dynasty, Chengdu was already a magnet for a diverse range of musical culture.
At present, Chengdu is dedicating to constructing a world famous city of culture and positioning itself as the "Three Cities & Three Capitals". One of the key steps is to become an International Capital of Music. The city's ambitious goal originates from history accumulation, as well as depends on the city's ceaseless development.
Music Creates Value
Music has become one of Chengdu's brand new cards.
In August 2016, the Chengdu Municipal Government launched the regulations to support the development of the music industry, as the first local policies of its kind in China, which stipulated specific measures for the benefits of music enterprise, original creativity, music performance and music copyright.
Amid the verdant streets and alleys of the city, music is increasingly integrated with local culture and industrial parks, which has been forming a recreational lifestyle and business model. At locales like the Eastern Suburb Memory Park in Chenghua District and Urban Music Workshop in Wuhou District, music has become a fertile soil that gives rise to a wide array of innovative and creative industries. Music-themed attractions in the city, such as Bailu Town in Pengzhou City and Jiezi Town in Chongzhou City, have always offered various kinds of events for visitors, resulting to the combination and development between music and other industries such as tourism, education and electronic games.
By the end of 2020, Chengdu is scheduled to have indoor venues for music performance with a total seating capacity of over 30,000, host more than 30 well-known music events, and foster the unique music industry parks and themed towns where musicians can seek their dreams. The value of music industry in the city is expected to reach over RMB57 billion in 2020.
Music Integrates into Daily Life
Folk song artist Zhao Lei's hit "Chengdu" propelled the namesake metropolis into the lime light in social media.
Zhao expressed his affection for the city during an interview, "I love Chengdu folks. It feels like you can chat with anyone on the streets and make friends easily. The locals are hospitable and welcoming. When you feel good, inspiration comes natural like a breeze."
The vibrant musical atmosphere provides a massive creative space for musicians.
In Chengdu, a "shared piano" embodies the pervasive music culture in this city.
The Sichuan Gymnasium Station, one of the busiest interchanges in the Chengdu Metronetwork, has been outfitted with a piano. Any passer-by may sit down to perform a song or two, adding a sense of leisure to this bustling subway station.
